Achieving Radiant Skin: My skincare routine

As a Women of color with combination skin, a concern of hyperpigmentation, and the unique challenge of PCOS, skincare isn’t as easy as it may seem. I’ve done some personal research to figure out the right skincare routine and products for achieving a radiant complexion. I’m here to tell you by incorporating the right products and practices, you can effectively address hyperpigmentation, maintain balanced skin, and unveil a vibrant and glowing complexion.

Know your skin

  • Before diving into a skincare routine, it is crucial to understand your skin type and any challenges your skin has. For me, I have combination skin with the challenge of hyperpigmentation from PCOS ingrown scarring. Combination skin refers to having oily or acne-prone areas (usually in the T-zone) and drier patches in other areas. Women of color are more prone to hyperpigmentation, which leads to uneven skin tone and dark spots. These issues can be triggered by factors such as hormonal changes and disorders, sun exposure, and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

Cleansers

  • The foundation of any skincare routine is a gentle and effective cleanser. Look for products that cater to your skin and concerns. Opt for a cleanser with natural ingredients like green tea, aloe vera, or licorice extract, which are known for their soothing properties. Avoid harsh cleansers that can strip the skin’s natural oils, as they can exacerbate dryness or trigger excess sebum production. Products containing salicylic acid or tea tree oil can be beneficial for managing acne-prone areas.

Cleansers I suggest are:

Serums

To address my hyperpigmentation, I use brightening treatments. Look for products with ingredients like vitamin C, kojic acid, niacinamide, and arbutin. These ingredients have been proven effective in reducing dark spots, evening out skin tone, and promoting a brighter complexion. Additionally, products containing antioxidants help protect the skin from free radicals and oxidative stress.

I’m a vitamin C serum girl myself, but here are a few of my suggestions:

This TruSkin is the exact one I use.

Moisturizers

Hydration is essential for all skin types. Opt for lightweight, non-comedogenic moisturizers (basically products that exclude ingredients that clog and block pores) that provide hydration without leaving a greasy residue. Look for ingredients such as hyaluronic acid and ceramides, which help to retain moisture. Be sure to apply moisturizer evenly across the face, paying attention to dry areas. A well-hydrated complexion enhances skin elasticity and promotes a healthier overall appearance.

Suggested Products:

Sunscreen

Last but certainly not least (probably most important) Sun Protection is a MUST. UV rays are one of the leading causes of hyperpigmentation and premature aging. Protect your skin by incorporating a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher into your daily routine. Note: You’re not just getting a gnarly tan or “darker” (side eye to you my black people), your skin is getting sun damaged.

For people of color look for sunscreens that are specifically formulated for melted skin, as they often offer a sheer finish that won’t leave a white cast on the skin. Remember to reapply sunscreen every two hours, especially if you’re exposed to direct sunlight.

Here’s my list for sunscreens that are white-cast free:

This is the one I use personally. It’s gel based and super light!

Achieving radiant skin requires a consistent skincare routine that addresses specific concerns. By understanding your skin type, incorporating brightening treatments, hydrating effectively, and protecting your skin from the sun, you can unlock a luminous complexion. Remember that consistency is key, and results may take time. Be patient, and stick to your skincare routine. With the right products and practices, you’ll be on your way to healthier, glowing skin that makes you feel confident and beautiful.
